Sacred Heart Church

Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church was built atop a hill overlooking Bras D’Or Lake in 1891. It opened its doors to local Christians on November 8 of the same year. Two local painters, both unknown, painted the interior walls and ceiling sometime in the 1940s. The arched ceiling is adorned with oval medallions depicting various church symbols such as the chalice and the cross.

Holy Ghost Ukrainian

The original Holy Ghost Ukrainian Catholic Church was built in 1911 and opened a year later. The building was devastated by fire in 1932 and all was lost save a few charred beams and the pews, which were later painted in faux wood grain.

Ryba Residence

Catalogue info: In 1927 Semen Yaroslawsky (1899-1966) arrived in Sydney from the Ukraine, Mr. Yaroslawsky worked in the steel plant but was unable to earn enough money to bring his wife and two young daughters to Canada. His wife died in 1942 and in 1947 one daughter joined him here. Some of the landscapes are Canadian while others are distinctly European.

Hardy Residence

Very little is known of this late 19th century Gabarus, Cape Breton home. The parlour features a decoratively painted ceiling. The artist is unknown although the similarities between the painted surfaces in this home and that of the Lomas-Anderson residence in Sherbrooke, NS may suggest that the artist was one of Ozia Leduc's assistants, Raoul Ducharme, Dollard Church, L.P. Martin or J.P.

Harris Residence

Little is known of this Cape Breton home. The front parlour features a painted ceiling (c. 1900). The artist is unknown but judging by the close similarities between the painted ceiling in this home and that of the Lomas-Anderson residence in Sherbrooke, NS one would assume that the artwork may have been completed by one of Ozia Leduc's assistants, Raoul Ducharme, Dollard Church, L.P.

Goduto Residence

The Goduto home features the painted artwork of Alfred Goduto, an Italian immigrant who came to live and work in Sydney, NS Canada in 1956. The modest home hosts two elaborately painted rooms, the front left parlour and the dinning room.

The dining room ceiling and walls were painted in 1971 and the parlour was painted approximately two years later.
