Gillis house
Catalogue info: Murals (two) and stencilled wall in the first floor right back room, Walter William Hess (b. 1910) 1952. Oil on wood. When the murals were painted, the house was owned by Angus William Gillis. He died in 1977 and the house was sold to the present owners. The house has since been unoccupied and the owners donated two murals to the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. The mural exhibition is of the Gillis farmstead. A smaller mural is the house in which Hess lived in the Black Forest. A third, Hess claimed to have painted on the wall of what is now the dining room. However, this can no longer be located. William Hess was born outside Basel, Switzerland, in 1910 and was brought up in Southern Bavaria, immigrating to Canada in 1951. In 1952 he worked for a year on Mr. Gilliss farm in Dunvegan. During that time he painted the three murals.
